Practical Exam
Key Requirements & Eligibility (Belgium)
Must be 18 years old to take the practical test.
Must pass the theory exam first. You can take theory from age 17.
Is valid for three years; The theory test result must be valid when you go for the practical test.
You must have a valid provisional licence. Depending on your training path, this licence has different terms (duration, supervision etc.) before you can take the practical test.
You'll usually need to complete a certain training / learner period before being allowed to go for the exam. Possible paths include: full driving school hours, partial private learner training with a mentor/guide, or a mix.
Some regions require a risk perception module, and first‐aid (or proof of having done first aid training) before taking parts of the test.
Documents needed for practical exam
On the day of the exam, you must bring these original documents to the exam center - valid national ID, your provisional licence, proof that you passed theory, registration/insurance/technical certification of the vehicle used in the test, etc.
Note: If you have an M18 you'll need the original 20 hours certificate from the driving school.
Paths & Training Options
Here are typical routes in some regions, showing how much practical training, what kind of guidance, how long you must hold a learner permit etc.:
Brussels‐Capital Region:
There are several paths:
- Private training: minimum 9 months with a guide. Must be 17+ to start.
- Combination of driving school + mentor: at least 14 hours in a driving school + 6 months with a guide.
- Training mostly in driving school: 20 hours in a driving school + at least 3 months. (Hours before age 18 don’t count.)
- Driving school without external training: 30 hours in a driving school, with direct access to the test (once age requirement is met).
Wallonia:
Similar: you need theory, a provisional licence, valid training, passing risk perception, etc.

Exam Format & Assessment
1. Eligibility
Before taking the practical exam:
- You must have passed the theory test.
- You need sufficient practice under your provisional license (M12, M18, or M36).
- In some cases, you must attend a risk perception test and/or first aid/attitude course (varies by region).
2. Exam Format
A. Pre-test checks
- Inspect the car (lights, tires, mirrors, documents).
- Answer a few technical questions about 4 categories of questions
- Q1: How do you know if you are well positioned on your seat?
- Q2: About the tire, how do you know if the tire needs to be replaced or where do you fill up the air?
- Q3: About all the liquids, engine oil, engine oil stick, break fluid, coolant, wiper fluid
- Q4: About all the lights, front and rear defogger, wipers.
B. You'll perform 2 manoeuvres, chosen at random from:
- Parking (parallel or perpendicular).
- Turning around (U-turn).
- Reversing in a straight line.
Brussels: In Brussels you'll always have same 2 manoeuvres (U-turn and right parallel parking)
⚠️ Failing one manoeuvre usually ends the exam immediately.
C. On-road driving (public roads)
Duration: About 35–45 minutes.
Covers: City, residential, and higher-speed roads.
You'll be assessed on:
- Observing traffic rules (priority, signs, speed).
- Safe manoeuvres (lane changes, overtaking, roundabouts).
- Anticipation and risk management.
- Use of mirrors, indicators, and positioning.
- Respect for vulnerable road users (pedestrians, cyclists).
3. Assessment System
The examiner uses a point deduction system:
- Minor Faults: Minor faults (e.g., forgetting a mirror check) = small deductions.
- Serious Faults: Serious faults (e.g., dangerous priority mistake) = immediate fail.
- Overall Rule: You are allowed some small mistakes, but too many minor faults or one dangerous mistake → fail.
At the end, the examiner gives a brief explanation of your result.
4. Outcome
✅ If you pass: You receive a certificate, then you can apply for the full driving license at your commune.
❌ If you fail: You must usually wait a short period before retaking (and after 2 or more failures, you will need 6 hours driving lessons at an approved school).
In short: The Belgian practical exam = technical questions + 2 manoeuvres + road driving, assessed on both technical skill and safe, anticipatory behaviour.
Costs
Between 45€ and 50€
