Theoretical Exam
The theory exam is a mandatory step in the process to obtain a Belgian driving license. The exam can only be given in Dutch or French though translation services are provided in English, depending on cost and availability. Unlike in Asian countries, the exam centers are privately run and managed. However, they all share data with each other, so a failure in one center will be automatically known to the other exam centers as well.
How to Register
All depends on the exam center: some ask you to come physically with your ID, while others allow an online appointment. Registration for the exam is mandatory. In most cases it can be done online except when you want to take the exam in English, in German, in French (in Flanders) or in Dutch (in Wallonia). Seats are limited so we recommend registering for the exam at least 2 months prior.
Exam Format & Rules
The purpose of the exam is to check your comprehension of all traffic laws and road signs, safety rules(seatbelt, speed, alcohol, phone use,...), right of way and priority rules.
The exam consists of 50 questions that must be answered in 30 minutes. Each of these questions gives 1 point per correct answer or -1 point per wrong answer, except for five questions that deal with 2nd or 3rd degree traffic offenses (-5 points per wrong answer for them). No, these special questions are not distinguishable from the other questions.
That means, you can only make one serious mistake or get nine 1 mark questions wrong or a combination thereof.
The exam is done on a computer (monitor, keyboard, mouse, headphone).
Tips for Success
Before the exam
1- Study regularly, not last minute
- Use the official Hand book or recognized apps/websites
- Do short study sessions every day instead of cramming
2- Practice with mock tests
- Try online simulations with 50 questions exams to get used to the format and timing
- Review your mistakes carefully and understand why you got them wrong
3- Focus on serious offences
- Remember: mistakes on things like priority rules, traffic lights and safety can cost you 5 Points each
- Train especially on these high risk areas
4- Learn the signs by heart
- Traffic signs are very common in the exam
- Pay extra attention to less obvious signs (end of zone, special restrictions, priority roads).
During the Exam
Read carefully: Don't rush; misreading a single word ("may" ≠ "must") could change your answer.
Look at all answers: Look at all the answers before choosing: Sometimes multiple answers look correct, but only one is the best according to the law.
Use elimination: Cross out answers that are clearly wrong; it makes the choice easier.
Manage your time: 50 questions in ~30 minutes = ~35 seconds per question. If you are stuck, choose your best guess and move on—you can't go back.
Mindset
- Stay calm: Stress leads to silly mistakes.
- Rest well: Don’t take the test tired.
- Arrive early: Rushing in late will only increase your stress.
💡 Extra tip: If you fail, don't panic. You can retake it the next day. Many candidates need 2–3 attempts before passing.
Special Needs / Translators
If you don’t speak French or Dutch you’ll need a translator, you can ask directly the exam center for one or they’ll give you a list of sworn translator and you’ll have to book one.
Outcome
✅ If you pass
If you pass you'll receive a certificate valid for 3 years. With this certificate you can apply for a provisional license M36.
❌ If you fail
If you fail you can retake your exam the next day, after 2 failures you must enroll with a certified driving school and attend a 12 hours driving theory class to get a certificate that will give you access to 2 more attempts.
