Speed Limits in Belgium
Belgium has comprehensive speed limit regulations governed by the Royal Decree Code of Public Roads. Speed limits vary by region (Brussels, Flanders, Wallonia), road type, and vehicle class. Speed enforcement is strict, with radar cameras and traffic police actively monitoring compliance.
Built-up Areas (General Rules)
- Brussels Capital Region: Default 30 km/h in most areas
- Flemish Region: Default 50 km/h in built-up areas
- Walloon Region: Default 50 km/h in built-up areas (30 km/h in pedestrian zones)
Built-up areas typically have signs marking boundaries. Special zones (residential, school) may have lower limits (30 km/h or 20 km/h). Some Brussels neighborhoods enforce strict 30 km/h policies.
Brussels Capital Region - Outside Built-up Areas
Motorways (A/E roads): 120 km/h (cars); 90 km/h (trucks >3.5t); 90-100 km/h (coaches); 90 km/h (buses)
Roads with 2+ lanes per direction, physically separated: 120 km/h (cars); 90 km/h (trucks); 90 km/h (buses, coaches)
Roads with 2+ lanes per direction, separated by road markings: 70 km/h (cars); 70 km/h (trucks); 70 km/h (buses); 70 km/h (coaches)
Other roads: 70 km/h (cars); 70 km/h (trucks); 60 km/h (buses, coaches, heavy vehicles >7.5t)
The 120 km/h limit for cars on Brussels motorways is rarely applicable in practice, as lower speed limits are imposed by road signs throughout the region. Most Brussels motorway sections have speed restrictions.

- Trucks with MAM >3.5t: Limited to 90 km/h on motorways; 70-90 km/h on other roads depending on region; subject to tachograph recording requirements
- Vehicles unable to reach 70 km/h minimum speed (agricultural vehicles, mobility scooters): Prohibited on motorways and expressways; must use regional/local roads
